Wee Academy: Farm

This interactive educational app is designed to build the vocabulary of young learners in a way that is intuitive and fun! It features 4 modes to help teach, test and reinforce the words learned.

One of my main concerns with most of the apps in the marketplace was their lack of focus on linguistic development. The early years of childhood are critical to language acquisition. This app was created to help toddlers (1-3) learn English whether it’s their first or second language. This app emulates how most toddlers learn.

LEARN

This mode was designed around how young toddlers learn new words. They usually point at a picture or object in expectation of hearing the parents say the word. In this mode when your child touches one of the cute pictures a real human voice plays providing them with the correct pronunciation of the word along with an animation, animal sound and the word.

Another stand out feature is that the voice over says each word in different ways e.g. “This is a cow” “It’s a cow” “Cow”. This not only helps build the child’s vocabulary but helps them get the feel for the rhythm of the language and intrinsically build the grammar rules involved in the language.

FIND

After your child has built up his vocabulary from the LEARN mode he can then test himself in FIND mode. Again a real human voice will play asking him to find the correct animal or object. Feedback is then provided through messages such as “Good job!” to help encourage learning.

PUZZLE

This mode will help develop your child’s motor skills, problem solving and memory. She will have to drag and drop the puzzle pieces of each of the farm animals into the correct place. It has 3 modes of difficulty so you can adjust it to suit your child so the puzzle is just challenging enough to maintain her interest and avoid frustration.

MATCH

The final mode is also designed develop your child’s motor skills and object recognition. He has to drag the picture of the animal onto the correct photograph of the animal. Again animations, animal sounds and audio will play to provide your child with crucial feedback for the learning process.
